Annual General Meeting

Location: Cornerstone Wesleyan Church
                      1215 Hammond Plains Road

All residents of Kingswood and Kingswood North are invited

Candidates for Councillor, District 14 introduction meeting (cancelled)

"The Kingswood Ratepayers Association thought a public meeting offering an opportunity for the three candidates seeking election in the new District 14 council seat to make themselves known to residents of Kingswood and nearby neighbourhoods would be useful.

KRA contacted the candidates - John Young, Edward Giles and John Martin Walker - and suggested the following:

"After talking with each of you and discussing your responses with the board of the Kingswood Ratepayers Association, I can confirm that KRA will host a meeting of candidates seeking election in District 14. We invite each of you to join us.

The meeting will take place at 7pm on Tuesday, October 8 at the Cornerstone Wesleyan Church, 1215 Hammonds Plains Road. I expect it will last 90 minutes or so.

The format will be as follows:

7pm - The meeting Chair will call the session to order and make brief remarks, noting the importance of people putting their names forward for jobs like Municipal Councillor and encouraging a respectful approach to the evening.

Each candidate will then have 5-7 minutes to do things like introduce himself, explain why he is running, describe what he hopes to accomplish and make any other points he wishes. (We will "draw lots" to choose the order speakers.)

There will then be an opportunity for questions from the audience. Based on what KRA has learned through our community surveys over the years, candidates can expect questions around traffic, wildfire responses, and infrastructure needs in this part of District 14 among other items.

After the questions, each candidate will have an opportunity for a closing statement (2-3 minutes).

Then the Meeting Chair will close the proceedings. There will be an opportunity to mingle after the formal session ends.

KRA will publicize the meeting through its own networks and invite other similar organizations along the Hammonds Plains Road to join the session. You each can publicize the session through your own channels, of course. We will send you our announcement shortly.

KRA will let you know if we hear that any members of the media are planning to attend."

John Young wrote, after his campaign manager had agreed to participate:

After checking our campaign calendar, unfortunately I am unable to attend your kingswood rate payer association district 14 candidate Q&A church event.

The kingswood rate payers association (kra) members and kingswood residents can still attend one of the upcoming District 14 Councillor Candidate John A. Young Meet and Greets on the following dates:

Tuesday, October 1/24 (5:00pm-6:30pm- Wallace Lucas Community Centre, Wednesday, October 2/24 (5:00pm-6:30pm)-Springfield Lake Recreation Centre or

Thursday, October 3/24 5:00pm-7:00pm)- Upper Hammonds Plains Community Centre.

All the addresses for these Meet and Greets are on our District 14 Campaign

Elect John A. Young HRM District 14

Facebook site.

Edward Giles wrote:

As I said, I would be willing to meet with your membership but not in a debate argument style event with others.

I have 7 generations of Family in the Bedford, Hammonds Plains, and Sackville, I can assure you all of my dedication to our community. We all share similar concerns over the issues.

I’m most interested and wanting to gather inputs form the constituency, as opposed shoving my own ideals down everyone’s throats.  That way, solutions work better for most everyone.

If your membership of Kingswood Ratepayers Association would like me to attend a discussion, I would very much like to hear more from them. I have been around to a number of homes in Kingswood area, but would definitely like to hear form others. I will be in the area again over the next couple of weeks. I should also have a postcard mailout distributed soon.

John Martin Walker wrote: Sure I will attend. Let me know if the others agree.

Given that only Mr. Martin Walker agreed to participate, KRA has reluctantly dropped the idea of a candidates meeting.

We thank Denn Guptill for making the church available as a venue.

We thank the candidates for offering to serve but we are disappointed that we were unable to get them together to hear their views. We hope that the winner, whoever he is, will be available to join us at the KRA  AGM on Monday November 18th at Cornerstone Wesleyan Church.

A message from Ben Jessome

Just wanted to note this link as an FYI regarding mandated accessibility by 2030 and some of the available programs, assistance and support that is in place to ensure we meet this timeline as a province. Note that municipalities are expected to have their plans submitted by this summer (which would include local parks and trails).

I would note the funding program for businesses and ask you to promote and encourage business owners in our community to connect with my office to discuss.

Long Lake Park Update

May 29, 2018 - The updates to Long Lake Park are almost done. Still waiting for some landscaping around the new playground and for the covered picnic table to be installed on a concrete slab. Should be finished in the next couple of weeks.

February 2018 - HRM Parks has completed a major expansion of the parking area at LaPierre Baseball field on Lakeshore Drive.

Kingswood Park#2

This is the park at the end of Kingswood Drive, on the loop. HRM is set to begin work to resolve drainage issues on the field that have plagued us since it was developed over 15 years ago. Once that work is complete, the KRA will be developing that field into something useful for residents. (Click to see map of the park)

Work is set to begin on September 5th and last approximately two weeks.

UPDATE: HRM has completed work on the field. It has been leveled and seeded, a french drain was added on one side and a ditch on the other side.

Long Lake Park

New dock is finally installed at Long Lake Park. New playground to follow.

UPDATE: HRM will not be installing the new playground until next spring, but the old playground will be removed and the ground will be prepped this fall.

Our annual community yard sale will be Saturday June 3rd, 2017 from 9:00 am to 1:00pm. In the event of rain, it will be held the following day, Sunday June 4th.

Please go to the Yard Sale Facebook group page for more information.

Who do I call when I have a problem?

As a reminder to residents, please use the non-emergency contact numbers to determine who to call in the HRM for everyday questions and problems.

Note, requests for repairs, maintenance, and improvements to parks, playgrounds, sports fields, streets, street signs/lights, and storm/waste water should be made to 311.

Pet Waste.

As a reminder to residents, pet waste must be scooped/bagged and disposed in the proper manner. In addition, pet waste bags should never be disposed on our trails, streets, ditches, and woods.
